Three years is three generations in phone years. My 14 Pro Max was the king of 2022; the 17 Pro is the king’s grandson, and the family resemblance is fading. Here is what the jump actually buys.

Body and Screen

Out goes the polished stainless steel; in comes a forged aluminum unibody with a vapor chamber inside — a thin sealed room of water vapor that carries heat away from the chip, so the phone stays fast instead of throttling down. The glass is Ceramic Shield 2, three times more scratch-resistant, and the screen peaks at 3,000 nits against the old 2,000: full daylight stops being a fight.

Cameras

On the 14 Pro Max, only the main camera was 48 megapixels; the ultra-wide and telephoto were 12. On the 17 Pro, all three are 48. The telephoto is new: 4x optical, and a clean 8x crop that Apple calls optical-quality — where the old phone stopped at 3x and started guessing.

The front camera may be the cleverest change: an 18MP Center Stage camera on a square sensor. It widens for a group, turns itself sideways for a landscape selfie while you still hold the phone upright, and keeps you framed on video calls as you move.

A19 Pro replaces A16 Bionic, with double the memory — 12GB against 6GB. Three chip generations is not a nudge; apps open like they were already open, and heavy work — games, video export, AI — stops making the phone hot and slow, because the vapor chamber holds the speed.

The Small Print
