The Moonstone —

Every detective novel you have ever read lives in this book’s house. Wilkie Collins published The Moonstone in 1868, and T. S. Eliot later gave the verdict: the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels.

The Story
故事

The Moonstone is a yellow diamond the size of a plover’s egg, sacred to the Hindu god of the moon. In 1799 a British colonel steals it from its shrine at the storming of Seringapatam, killing its guards — and the stone’s three hereditary priests swear to follow it, for as many generations as it takes.

Half a century later the diamond reaches a Yorkshire country house, as an eighteenth-birthday present for Rachel Verinder — a gift with a curse folded inside it. She wears it to dinner, locks it in her bedroom cabinet, and by morning it is gone. Three Indian jugglers have been seen near the house. Everyone else in the story is family, servants, or guests.

London sends its best: Sergeant Cuff, lean, melancholy, and mad about roses. He reads the house like a book — a smear of paint on a door, a nightgown that must exist somewhere, a young lady who will not explain herself. His prime suspect is the housemaid, Rosanna Spearman. Then Rosanna walks into the Shivering Sand, the local quicksand, and does not walk out.

Told in Turns

Nobody tells this story. Everybody does. Franklin Blake collects written accounts from the witnesses, each ordered to write only what they personally saw — and the book passes from voice to voice like a relay baton. First comes Gabriel Betteredge, the old steward, who consults Robinson Crusoe the way other men consult a priest: open it at random, and the page will advise you.

Then comes Miss Clack, the saintly cousin, hiding improving religious tracts around the house like landmines and narrating her own virtue — the funniest voice in the book, and the least reliable. That is the game’s rule: every narrator is honest, and every narrator is wrong about something. The truth is the sum of the parts, and Collins plays fair — the clues were on the table all along.

The Opium Key

Here the ending is given away — skip this section if you mean to read the book. A year later, the dying Ezra Jennings, a doctor’s assistant with a ruined face and an opium habit of his own, pieces together what the doctor’s fevered rambling means: on the birthday night, Franklin Blake was secretly dosed with laudanum, as a joke, after an argument about medicine.

So Jennings stages the book’s great scene: recreate the night exactly — same room, same guests, same dose — and watch what a drugged man does. Franklin, asleep on his feet, takes the diamond to keep it safe… and hands it to the one man awake enough to steal it: the philanthropist Godfrey Ablewhite, who has been quietly looting a trust fund and needs money more than virtue. The priests find him before the law does.

Why It Still Matters

Open any modern mystery and the furniture is Collins’s: the country-house crime, the brilliant detective against the bumbling local police, the red herrings, the least likely suspect, the reconstruction of the crime before the assembled cast. Conan Doyle read this book. So did everyone after him.

Under the puzzle sits a harder thought. The diamond was loot — sacred property carried off by empire, and the book never quite lets the English house forget it. The three priests are treated by the household as sinister intruders; the novel slowly reveals them as the only people in it who keep faith for fifty years. The last pages give the stone back to the god’s forehead, and it is the most just ending a stolen thing can have.

It is long, it is Victorian, and it does not hurry. But read it the way it was first read — a voice at a time, a clue at a time — and 1868 starts to feel very close to home. The first detective novel is not a museum piece. It is the one that taught the rest how to breathe.

Good to Know

First published in weekly parts in Dickens’s magazine All the Year Round in 1868 — each installment ending on a hook, which is why the middle never sags for long.

Sergeant Cuff was modeled on Inspector Jonathan Whicher, a real Scotland Yard detective from the famous Road Hill House case — paint-stained nightclothes and all.

Collins wrote much of it in pain, dosed with the same laudanum that drives his plot. He said that when he finished, he did not recognize the book as his own. The opium in this novel is not research. It is a diary.

The copy I read when I was young carried a wilder name: The Demon God’s Gem. That was the classic Chinese title of the early editions — in the 1970s, publishers such as 青文出版社 put the book into their world adventure and literary classics selections under that name. A moon god, a yellow diamond in his forehead, and three priests who never forgive — the old title was dramatic, and it was honest.
