Every Sunday I drive into the East Bay hills to a town whose name is a shrug: El Sobrante — Spanish for “the leftover.” Curiosity got the better of me: what kind of place calls itself the land nobody claimed first?
Calling a place “the leftovers” to its face feels like a shrug — “Oh, whatever, it’s just the leftover bit!”

The Name
名字
In 1841, Mexico’s governor granted the Castro brothers — Juan José and Víctor — 20,565 acres between El Sobrante and today’s Orinda. But the grant was defined backwards: its borders were simply wherever the six neighboring ranchos ended. San Antonio, San Pablo, El Pinole, Acalanes — draw all of those, and what remained in the middle was the sobrante: the surplus. The leftover.
San Antonio、San Pablo、El Pinole、Acalanes……
Leftovers invite arguments. Fuzzy borders and Gold Rush squatters fed forty years of lawsuits, and the land was sold off, acre by acre, to pay the lawyers. Víctor Castro ended with 549 of his 20,565 acres — and a seat as one of Contra Costa County’s first supervisors. The “El” arrived only in 1941, with the first post office.
The Land
土地
People were here long before the ranchos. A village of the Huchiun, an Ohlone people, stood beside San Pablo Creek where the El Sobrante library stands today; their shell mound still lies buried by the creek. The creek gives the town its one long street — San Pablo Dam Road — and at the valley’s end, the San Pablo Reservoir holds the region’s drinking water, all rowboats and herons now.
The Town Today
About fifteen and a half thousand people — 15,524 at the 2020 census — and no city hall: El Sobrante is unincorporated, run by the county, a place that never quite became a city and doesn’t seem to mind. Downtown is a modest strip: a hardware store trading since the 1940s, and the old Park Theatre, built 1949, once the town’s only movie house. Behind the strip, the roads climb into oak hills where horses still outnumber coffee shops.
The name says nobody wanted it first. The hills, the creek, and the quiet say the Castro brothers got the better end of the map after all.
Good to Know
Say it: el so-BRAHN-teh. Sobrante is the everyday Spanish word for leftovers — the same word you would use for last night’s dinner.
There is a second El Sobrante in Riverside County, Southern California — same name, same kind of rancho story, different town. Ours is the Contra Costa one, in the hills between Richmond and Orinda.
From Union City it is roughly a 45-to-55-minute Sunday-morning drive, up the East Bay freeways and over the hill.

Let’s Talk About It
Two locals at the coffee shop, talking about the town with the funny name.
Tom: So be honest — who names a town “The Leftover”?
Jenny: Ha! The Spanish did — El Sobrante, “the surplus.” We just kept the name.
Tom: Still — nothing ever happens up here.
Jenny: That’s the whole point, Tom. Quiet hills, no traffic jams, no drama.
Tom: True. My blood pressure drops ten points on the drive home.
Jenny: See? People pay good money for that kind of peace and quiet.
Tom: And the views aren’t bad either — for a leftover.
Jenny: Not bad? On a clear day you can see half the Bay from up there!
Tom: Okay, okay — leftover or not, I’m not moving.
Jenny: Smart man. More leftover for the rest of us.
