All summer, the Bay Area sky does one thing: blue. Then one October morning the light changes, the air smells different, and you remember — the rain is coming back. The season is turning, and it asks nothing of us but to notice.

The Signs
The signs are small: clouds with some weight in them, a wind that has somewhere to go, evenings that arrive a little earlier and a little cooler. California does not do autumn with red leaves. It does it with the first rain.
What the Rain Asks
Rain is a strict teacher of the present moment. It cancels the plan you made for the garden, shortens the walk, and changes the sound of the whole house. You can fight it, or you can listen: the roof, the gutters, the street — everything is playing.
And staying in turns into a pleasure instead of a defeat: a pot of soup on the stove, tea going cold because the book is good, music practice that runs long because there is nowhere else to be.
Between Showers
Between the rains comes the washed world: hills getting ready to turn green, puddles holding pieces of sky, air rinsed clean. A short walk between showers is the Bay Area winter’s gift — take it when it opens, and don’t check the phone first.
Good to Know
須知
The umbrella moves to the front door from now on — not as worry, but as readiness. Being prepared is a quiet form of peace.
The forecast says this week’s rain is still small, and the real season builds slowly. Good. Presence is easier to practice in small doses.
When the first real rain hits the roof at night, don’t reach for the phone. Just listen, for one full minute. That is the whole exercise.

Let’s Talk About It
Two neighbors, one driveway, and the weather — the most American small talk there is.
Mike: Morning, Sara! Looks like the rain’s finally coming back, huh?
Sara: About time! My yard is drier than a bone.
Mike: Tell me about it. I almost forgot what rain sounds like.
Sara: No kidding. The weatherman says just a little this week, though.
Mike: Yeah, nothing crazy. But hey — I’ll take it.
Sara: Same here. Time to dig my umbrella out of the closet.
Mike: Ha! Mine’s been collecting dust since April.
Sara: Well, stay dry out there — don’t get soaked!
Mike: You too! Catch you later — hopefully under sunnier skies next week.
